Pandaripuram

Introduction:

Music to human ears is heavenly, and if it’s purely devotional, it’s truly divine. Such a genre of music is the bhajan. Nothing can be more deeply rooted in the Indian tradition than bhajans. Bhajans are simple songs in soulful language expressing the many-splendored emotions of love for God, a complete submission or self-surrender to him through singing.

Bhajans and devotional songs are very famous among masses as there is no difference of caste, religion and sex during such holy gatherings where people all together indulge in singing of such devotional songs. At the same time it is also a source of mental relaxation and improving of concentration. Singing of Bhajans and devotional songs is also a source of recreation among the people of same mentality and belief. It is one of the mediums of social bonding in India to sing Bhajans and devotional songs in a group.

When we speak about Bhajans, the first thing comes to our mind is Pandaripuram, a place on the border between Karnataka and Maharastra, where the Almighty has his hand placed on the hip and the expression of this posture explains that he is enjoying the Bhajans of his devotees.

About Pandaripuram and Sthalapuranam:

Pandaripuram which is also called “Pandharpur” is located about 75 kms from Solapur in Maharastra. Since, the God stood in a place called “Pandari” this sthalam is so called as “Pandaripuram”.

THE PERUMAL OF THIS STHALAM IS SRI PANDURANGAN. He is also called with the names ‘Sri Vittobha’ and ‘Pandarinathan’. He is found to be giving his seva in Nidra thirukkolam facing his thirumugham towards east direction.

In the previous times, this location (where now Pandaripuram is found) is known as “Thandiravanam”. There was a large forest area close to this place is found and an aged couple named Mukthabhai and Sanadevan led their life there. They had a beautiful child by named “Pundareegan” and he had a great love towards his parents. Since, Indiran killed Asuran, Virutharasuran, he was given a sabham that he would become a brick/stone because of his sin and as a stone, he was thrown in front of the house of Pundareegan. Sri Krishnar wanted to test the love and affection of Pundareegan. When Bhagavan came towards his house, Pundareegan was serving food to his parents. Sriman Narayanan asked him to come out the hut, but Pundareegan did not want to break the service that he was doing to his parents and asked Sri Krishnar to stand on the stone that is placed in front of their hut. But soon after, Sriman Narayanan’s divine feet placed on the stone, Indiran got his original appearance and thanked both Sri Krishnar and Pundareegan. And after serving his parents, Pundareegan came out of the hut and worshipped the perumal. By fully convinced on the bhakti of him, Sri Krishnar stood in that place and as asked by Pundareegan, the perumal stood there as “Vittalan”. Since the perumal gave his seva for Pundareegan, the perumal is also called as “Pundareega Varadhan”.

Gorakkumbhar and Pandarinathan: Once, in this place, there lived a person called “Gorakkumbhar”. He had a great faith and bhakti towards Sri Pandarinathan. Like how we breathe and release air, he expressed Vittalans thiru Naamam and chanted it (he led his life by making pots). To make pots, the clay, sand and water needs to be mixed together and they usually mix it using their feets. One day while he stamping for it, his small kid just happened to come near the place where he was stamping the clay. Because of over joy and the bhakti along with the clay, he accidentally stamped his small child also. And after a while his wife returned and searched for the kid but could see only the cloth of it, which got mixed with the clay. Only then she realized that her child has been killed in the process of making the pots Gorakkumbhar and his wife cried and the Perumal as Sri Pandurangan came in front of the couples. He gave back the life of the child because of the great bhakti of Gorakkumbhar. The Paintings and the expressions of this story can been seen in Pandaripuram temple.

There is another great specialty in this sthalam and it is the way we worship the Almighty. They adapt as process called “Padha Sparisa Seva” and it is that we can place our fore head touching the divine feet of the God in Garbagriham (Moolavar Sannadhi). And it is considered as a special one if we do it on Wednesdays.

A Humble Attempt:

We, the human society at Ambattur, Chennai, with various salutations have ventured to bring out from 2nd to 12th of January 2010, a special peaceful function of coexistence irrespective of any faith in this illusionary world. First we take obeisance to all the manifestations of every religion and treat them with same reverence.

Everyone must have heard of PANDHARPUR where LORD KRISHNA manifested as PANDURANGA alias VITTAL. He is also called ‘SRI VITTAL’ because his great South Indian devotee, SRI PUNDAREENATHAN, a devoted son, made the lord and his wife stand on bricks.

We are devotionally planning to bring pandharpur here during the function. There will be a replica of PANDHARPUR temple in miniature size with the surrounding of bazaar with nearly 100 pandas (pandit of pandharpur temple are called pandas) performing the daily rituals at this miniature temple. The streets will be filled with Namasangeerthanam. There will be several stalls in this bazaar like pandharpur.

As this kind of function is the first in this part of the country, we have planned for coverage through T.V., banners, magazines, cutouts, etc. We expect the number of devotees to visit this venue between 1 lakh to 1.5 lakhs.
